Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.

A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
